Faith, Hope and Gravity is the spiritual, magical adventure of teenage Liam Kane as he discovers some of the same lessons Merrill Osmond learned as the world-traveling lead singer of the Osmond Brothers. Merrill, like Liam, was often misunderstood for his visionary quests to understand those who looked for answers to life's questions. Liam's talents gain him international notoriety as "The Prophecy Boy" who swims with dolphins, dreams of a mysterious red door, and champions those who are misunderstood. Surviving kidnapping, near-drowning, and imprisonment ultimately leads to the discovery that despite inherent differences, when people respect one another's unique abilities, the thread of commonality that runs through mankind grows ever stronger. Turn the pages and join the unforgettable journey.
Review

Faith, Hope, and Gravity is a fascinating and complex story about Liam, a visionary boy who is searching for his path in life. I had a hard time trying to classify its genre: it's about a teenage boy so it is contemporary young adult, it has a Christian-based undertone so it is definitely inspirational, and it is also a coming-of-age tale. But overall, I feel that the main story was just about Liam growing up, something that we all have to do.
"We don't always want what we need. Change can be hard, but it can be good, too."

During Liam's many journeys and adventures, he meets a number of unique characters. I loved that even his dog, Quigley had a very distinct personality! Many of these characters are visionaries like himself. They all play a role in helping him in his journey but I wished that some of them had bigger roles. I would have loved to see more of Catriona!

I did really like the messages that were conveyed throughout the book. It wasn't religion-specific but it did teach about faith and seeing God's plan for each one of us.
"Faith is being sure of what is hoped for and certain of what we do not see."

Liam learns that everyone has a place in this world and that we each are each blessed with unique gifts. This is an especially important lesson for youth to hear and internalize. I also liked how his special connections to people all over the world reminded me that the human race is one big family. Other messages conveyed in this book include forgiveness, change, and letting go.

At times this book was very sad but the overall feel of it was insightful, inspiring, and hopeful. It would make a perfect read for youth trying to find their own way in this world.

Shirley Bahlmann has written a wide variety of genres, including historical fiction, novels, biographies, how-to, and how-not-to books. One of her favorites is a children’s book titled When the Chicken Crossed the Road which comes with instructions and a chicken-colored washcloth so you can roll your own chicken! Shirley finds the most annoying thing about being a prolific writer is sleep, because she’d rather be writing.
