On the surface, Eva Black’s life seems practically perfect. The small-town kindergarten teacher is set to wed ambitious lawyer Sean Langley, and their plans for a dream wedding are well underway. Eva accepts that she will soon live life in the spotlight as a member of the prestigious Langley family, but can she overlook her fiancĂ©’s tendency to dominate the details of her life and push the limits of her standards?
Mere weeks before the wedding, Eva is thrown into a traumatic, life-changing event that changes her view of family commitment and creates a sharp contrast between her ideals and Sean’s. With her engagement to Sean in jeopardy, Eva finds herself relying on the support and encouragement of Peter, her kind and attentive next-door neighbor. Faced with a choice between her penitent fiancĂ© and the increasingly mysterious Peter, Eva is unprepared for the consequences—and peril—that come with her decision.
Review
I literally read this book in one day. Yeah, it is that good!
The Guy Next Door was a pleasant surprise. What I figured would be a light romance was in fact a deeply emotional story about love, loss, and family. It was centered around a sweet love story but it also had plenty of drama and suspense (my favorite combination!)
I love how strong and capable Eva turns out to be. With all the pain and emotional upheaval in her life, it is amazing that she continues with faith and optimism. She steps up to whatever comes her way and makes some tough decisions, even knowing how much pain they will cause her.
I also enjoyed Eva's relationship with Peter (the "guy next door"). I liked how slowly and easily they transitioned from friends to something more. It was comfortable and sweet and was a great example of building a relationship based upon friendship.
And though Eva's "obsession" with Sean drives me crazy, I totally understand where she was coming from. I have known many guys like that in my life and seen girls close to me fall for them. Even though he was very manipulative, he did have some redeeming qualities that made him somewhat irresistable.
Overall, I can't say enough good things about this book and would definitely recommend scheduling a day to read it - you won't want to put it down!
